I was playing with focal length, exposure settings, and unusual angles the other day while exploring my own front yard. This shot is almost SOOC; I just applied a quick softening filter in Photoshop before adding the quotation. I'm thinking this might wind up printed and hung on my office wall.
Sometimes, it's just fun to play...

I love those crinkly lines around Jim's eyes. Absolutely love them. I shot this portrait shortly after this one, proving to myself that I really can use my fixed 50mm lens to get super-close.

Shot in the magic hour just before sunset. Since Jim's so light-sensitive, I think this is the solution to getting photos where his eyes are wide open.

It never ceases to amaze me: sometimes the out-takes from a shoot are as precious as the shots I really worked at. Veronica was watching her brothers tussle when I swung my camera around and caught this quick candid. Something about the shot makes me happy, but I can't precisely put my finger on it. Maybe it's her beautiful profile, where you can still see a bit of the little girl mixed in with the woman she's becoming ... maybe it's the way I've caught her looking forward, out of frame, at a time when she's got so many things ahead of her - first year at Youth Camp, first year of Junior High, first time on the Drill Team, first "teenage" birthday this year ... or maybe it's the fact that the whole photo just screams "summertime" to me. I don't know. But it makes me happy.

It's been a while since I shot photos of Veronica. In fact, I think the most recent ones I have are nearly six months old. (Shame on me!) So I'm planning to take her out for a location shoot in the next few weeks... but in the meanwhile, I caught this one at the house last weekend when I was taking some test shots.

Eddie hates my camera. He ducks his head and hides every time I pick it up. But last weekend, when he realized I wasn't using my speedlight, he was much more cooperative. (And having Jim standing over my shoulder getting his attention helped a lot, too.)
These were both shot with my new 50mm 1.4 Nikkor lens (set at f/2.0, using natural light from the nearby door). I may not be entirely sure how to pronounce "bokeh" but I sure know how to shoot it - and this lens creates some of the yummiest effects.
C'mon - when his eyes are in focus, but his nose isn't? That's just cool. Love me some bokeh.
